Meet your instructor
I'm Kristyn Smith, the barn manager and instructor at Lucky Star Stable. I run the program, lead all lessons, and handle scheduling, lesson plans, and any decisions related to your riding.
How lessons work and what's expected
We run on a session-based schedule rather than booking lesson by lesson, because consistency is the single most important factor in a rider's development — committing to a session means committing to progress. Sessions are typically four-week blocks (this may vary around holidays) and are built around school vacations. You pay for the full session upfront, much like gymnastics or ballet — you're reserving your spot for the whole block.
Upcoming session dates are emailed out a few weeks in advance, and you'll complete a quick Google Form each session (located under the forms section) to choose the total number of lessons you want and leave any important comments about your schedule. To keep instruction high quality, group lessons are capped at no more than four riders, with rare exceptions.
We ask for a minimum of four lessons per session. Riders who show up regularly, engage with all types of lessons (including unmounted ones), and take ownership of their time at the barn simply become better riders — and this structure is designed to make that easier for everyone.
Barn expectations
Being a good rider extends beyond your time in the saddle. All riders are expected to arrive on time and ready to ride — late arrivals cut into lesson time and affect the whole group. Tack must be cleaned and put away correctly before and after every ride, every time.
Payment and scheduling
Payment is due upfront at the start of each session, by Venmo or check. You're also welcome to add lessons during a session as the schedule permits; just pay for the added lesson at that time.
If you can't make a lesson
Life happens. If you need to miss a scheduled lesson, you're welcome to join another suitable lesson that same week. If you'll be out for several weeks, let me know and I'll do my best to help you double up on the weeks you're here. Please note there are no refunds or rollovers for missed lessons.
Weather and rescheduling
If it's too cold or there's a thunderstorm, we'll offer an unmounted lesson in place of the mounted one. Unmounted lessons are just as valuable as mounted ones and are an important part of horsemanship and horse care — a mounted lesson that converts to unmounted still counts as your lesson for the week. If a lesson ever needs to be moved for personal reasons, I'll always offer two alternative options that same week.
More than just lessons
Throughout the year we also offer camps and clinics — including Beginner and Advanced Beginner camps, an Advanced Eventing camp, and visiting clinicians — so there are always opportunities to grow as a rider beyond your weekly sessions.
